To Judge a Book by Its Cover – Conceptual Typography as a Tool of Visual Communication in Book Cover Designs is a research-based publication examining the interpretation of the visual language of typography.
Drawing on insights from multiple research methods, including literature reviews and expert interviews with graphic designers, the first phase of the study addresses a research gap by proposing a tentative definition of conceptual typography.
The second research phase focuses on analysing the cognitive and emotional responses evoked by typographic form. Here, theory is translated into practice through the design of a conceptual display typeface for a book cover title. This typographic solution is tested on a general audience to investigate how effectively a typeface alone can communicate aspects of a book’s content, without relying on additional imagery or text.
This study and its accompanying publication were developed for a Bachelor's thesis at the Cologne International School of Design.
